Ao Nang is as earlier mentioned the only real tourist-trap in the Krabi province. But not in a “Patong Beach – Bangla Road”-kind of way. Ao Nang is quite small, you can walk from one end to the other in 15 minutes, and lives up to the thai-saying “Same-Same”. In Ao Nang you will find a massive amount of shops offering the usual rip-off clothes, pharmacies and quite some places to eat. In the western end of the beach, there is a group of nice restaurants, offering great seafood. In the eastern end of the beach, you find a hippie area, where any kind of massage is offered. If you seem to have problems finding this place, which we can’t remember the name of, just walk in east-direction towards the Ao Nang Villa Resort, and be sure to look like a tourist. Then the local people offering massage, will find you without a doubt.
As most tourist-traps all over the world, Ao Nang do not show you the kind of Thailand, as we would like to know. But very close the city Nopparat Thara is located. Nopparat Thara is also placed at the beach. and is where the local people meet for thai-picnic in the afternoon. So this is a good place to go for a afternoon walk, and find a small bar to get a fresh orange/lime shake. If you are going out for an island trip from Ao Nang, most of the big tours providers take out from the pier at the western end of Nopparat Thara. We took a trip to the 4 Islands (not really something special – I will get back to this later) after this we walked in eastern direction towards Ao Nang. Along the road you will find a lot of local food stalls, with all kind of Thai foods and some small bars. Remember to enjoy the walk, and the fact that you will not meet a lot of other tourists. At the end of Nopparat Thara, you can continue into Ao Nang and enjoy your dinner at the good seafood restaurants. A great way to see the area in a better way.
