…or actually 4 nights – we was at the Shangri-La hotel Horizon Club floors by the riverside in Bangkok. When finding a hotel, the choises will be between something in the center of the city or something on the riverside. I our opinion the best idea is to find a hotel at the riverside, and near the Sky Train. Doing so, makes you able to get around fast, and enjoy the beauty of the river at night.
Bangkok is a very vibrant city, and the traffic is so intense, that by far the train is the best way to go around. Otherwise you will spend your days in a traffic-que.
The Shangri-La is, besides a very classy and nice 5 star hotel, placed brilliantly at the bank of the river, 5 minutes by foot to the nearest Sky Train station and the dock if you prefer to take the boats up-river.
We stayed as mentioned in one of their Horizon Club rooms – and the extra services that you get is really worth the money. You get the dedicated lounge, snacks, cocktails and a lot of different small stuff, that just makes your stay even more comfortable and relaxing. Fx you get at private check out – a nice detail.
One thing you have to consider when choosing the room, remember that a balcony towards the river, also means a lot of noise from the longtails blasting up and down the river – which goes on at all times of day and night. On our first night we stayed in a room with a balcony, but got an upgrade for the second night, to a more peaceful room.
Pro’s and con’s about the Shangri-La; The service and staff is perfect, very attentive, positive and helpful. The location is great and the rooms has a ok size, with some good bathrooms. The hotel seems a bit worn in some places, and the are at the moment doing some refurbishment in some areas. In typical thai manner – the areas with are being refurbished, are closed off and hidden, so you don’t even notice it if you just walk by. All in all – the Shangri-La is quite the “safe-choise” in Bangkok

At the river there is also the Mandarin Oriental, The Peninsula and Hilton Millennium – the last 2 on the “wrong” side of the riverbank, facing away from the city center. But you can quickly get over the river with some of the “1-baht-boats” crossing the river – and the Sky Train also crosses the river in one place.
