In august Travellersplanet went to Berlin, to celebrate one of ours birthdays. As luxury-lovers, the only place to stay in Berlin is of cause Hotel Adlon Kimpinski. Should you not know about Adlon, here is a quick historic lesson:
The Adlon is one of europe’s most known 5 star hotels, which have had guests fx like Johnny Depp, Charlie Chaplin and yes – this is also the hotel where the Late Michael Jackson held his baby over the edge of the balcony. Hotel Adlon is legendary for world class luxury and service, and hosts a lot of the rich and famous people visiting Berlin. Originally build in 1907 right at the corner of Pariser Platz, facing Brandenburger Gate, the Adlon offered a new place and standard which could host late receptions given by the nobility and the wealthy. Lorenz Adlon, a wine importer, started the idea to Adlon in 1905, when he bought two properties on the street Unter den Linden. He wanted to build a luxury hotel, with a level of those in London, Paris etc at the time. During the end of World War 2, a fire starter by intoxicated Red Army soldiers, left the main building in ruins, and most go the original Adlon was gone. After the war, the part that was left after demolishing the ruins in 1952, was renovated in 1964. During the 70’s the hotel was closed to guest and finally the rest demolished in 1948. With the reunification of Germany, the site was bought by a west german investment firm, and Adlon was reopened in 1997, which additional expansions twice in 2003 and 2004. The original address Unter den Linden 1, changes during the east german era, where the avenue was renumbered starting from the oppersite end, and Adlon now has the address Under den Linden 77, even though it is a the same spot as always.

Enough history – let talk about staying at the Adlon. We were staying in a 80 sqm Brandenburger Gate Suite, with the most amazing views over Brandenburger Gate. The suite has separate living room and bedroom, jacuzzi, steam bath, bathtub, walk in closet and everything else you need. Furniture was elegant and classy, clean and really nice. The hotel also provides fitness area, swimming pool, luxury shops, three michelin restaurants (!) wine-bar etc – truly a place where you could stay forever. Adlon is known for their afternoon tea at the lobby, which is nothing compared with the breakfast, which is out of the ordinary. A vast buffet with everything you can imagine and then a little more. Huge bowls of berries, fruits, caviar etc.
We have stayed at quite a few luxury hotels, but one the things making Adlon stand out, is the personal service, which is second to none. Germans are known for setting high standards for everything, so just imagine how high a standard they get, when the want to be the best luxury hotel! At all times you are addressed by name, the staff cares about how you like the hotel, your stay and their service, and they keep doing their best to meet your wishes. Being in a young couple like us in the late 20’s and start 30’s – we stood a bit out, compared to the average Adlon guest, which is more like in their 50’s. But we where treated like everyone else. The concierge was very helpful with booking dinner tables, and also for finding a solution, when the restaurant where they booked for us, made a mistake, and didn’t have any table for us. When checking in at the hotel, you will be directed a hostess, one of the women in the red dresses. Your hostess is your connection at the hotel, and the person you can contact with anything 24 hours, and they help you right away. Truely a great detail, and it works perfect.
The hotel is beautiful decorated and designed, in the style you expect for a world class hotel. and the location at the Brandenburger Gate is as central as it gets in Berlin – you can walk around to most of the spots in Mitte that you must see.
We don’t have that many pictures from common areas of the hotel, because there is a strict policy not to take pictures in these areas, due to the amount of actors, politicians etc staying at the hotel, and to respect other guests privacy. If you are going to Berlin, and you want to stay in the ultimate luxury, there is only one place you can book your stay – Adlon is really Berlin at it’s very best…
It is almost needless to say, but of cause Adlon has been rewarded Best luxury hotel, World luxury hotel, Europe leading hotel etc several times – nothing compares…
