Viceroy – One of the upcoming luxury hotels in New York
During our ongoing trip to New York, we have planned to stay at 4 different 5 star hotels. One of these were “a new kid in town” – Viceroy at West 57th street. The hotel group has a lot hotels and resorts all over the world, but the New York hotel is quite new.
When we look for hotels, and try to find that extra “something” the key factors are; Atmosphere and how the staff interacts with the guests. Of course, we also want a great location and nice design. But somehow it all comes back to one thing – the atmosphere and the persons how create it.
Viceroy is a great example of what we think is good manners at a luxury hotel. Arriving at the hotel, the doorman quickly picked up our baggage. Upon check-in we got a good information about the hotel, the room and our booking. The front desk was very positive and smiling, and a few moments later we was in our room. Thats how it is supposed to be done.
Once we got over the fact that our room, including the bathroom was the size of our quite small bedroom at home, we began to enjoy the cosy coolness of Viceroy. On the trip we found out that most new york hotel rooms is quite small, so the size acutely was good.
The location is nothing but perfect, if you are in New York to shop and check out midtown and upper east and west side by foot. two blocks from Central Park, Carnegie Hall right around the corner, and 10 minutes walk to the gasping mass of humans on Times Square. In our opinion, it couldn´t be better situated. We loved to walk around in the cities that we visit, to get the best impression and face the streets. So if you are a “walker” like us, you will love it here.
The rooms are, what we would describe as a mixture of trendy cool and classy decors. The blue colors, brown leather and wood, gives the rooms a certain feel of style in a classic way we love. The bathrooms are in mosaics and marble, again keeping the right feel and look for the hotel. The designers Stephen Alesh and Robin Standefer of firm Roman and Williams has created a hotel, which haven’t been seen this classy and stylish since the great times when icons like The Plaza and Titanic was brand new. The design becomes the footprint that Viceroy leaves in your mind, and makes you remember the hotel.
In the morning you can have your breakfast in Kingside, the restaurant located right besides the lobby. We tried this once, and got a great breakfast at a quite reasonable price. The decor of Kingside, continues the style of Viceroy, with a little twist of original american diner, tiles, classic luxury airliners and wooden benches. Kingside is open for service all day, and also for cocktails at night. This place is very popular, and gets a lot for guests from outside the Viceroy.
At the moment Viceroy are finishing The Roof, which will be a lounge and rooftop terrace, offering some breathtaking views over Central Park. When we visited Viceroy in december 2013, The Roof was not finished yet, so we were not able to check it out, but we are sure, that it will keep the high standards of the rest of the hotel, and be a great place to spend a few hours.
There is one, very important detail, that we know the hotel is working to improve at the moment – the missing sound insulation between the connected rooms. We could hear everything going on in the room next door. The guest was having a phone call at midnight, which she for sure is more than welcome to have, but it sounded like she was sitting in our bed, having the conversation. With this said, the front desk told us that the problem is fixed in most of the rooms, and they are working on the last ones at the moment. Properly one of them we stayed in, and by the time you read this, the problem hopefully should be gone.
The Viceroy gets our warmest recommendations for a great stay in New York, close to Central Park and midtown, with a style, design and service like a true 5 star hotel.
