The iconic bridge between Manhatten and Brooklyn is a sight that you must seen when visiting New York. A lot of the hop on / hop off’s offers to take you across the bridge in a few minutes, but in our opinion it would be a great shame, not to pay one to the worlds oldest suspension bridges the right respect. Take your time, and enjoy the live on the walking deck, and see people from all over the world, cross the east river on this fabulous structure. Brooklyn Bridge was finished in 1883, and was initially designed by the German immigrant John Augustus Roebling, but due to a severe injury with caused Mr. Roeblings death, his son Washington took over the project. He had to finish the project from his apartment, with view over the bridge, when he got decompression sickness. His wife became the eyes on the site, and the link between Washington and the workers.
On the bridge you find small stands selling souvenirs, artists, tourist from all over the world and all the love-locks strapped to the structure. Our best advice, is to start you trip across half a hour before the sun is beginning to set. Then you will be on the bridge when the light is getting low, and have one of the most stunning views onto Manhattens skyline. When reaching Brooklyn, walk down the stairs, and turn right towards the riverbank. From down here, standing between Brooklyn and Manhatten Bridge, you will get memories of a breathtaking view towards The Big Apple.
But hey – what about the 21 elephants, where do they fit in to this? Well one of the things you must know about Brooklyn Bridge, is that 6 days after opening a rumor that it was about to collapse caused a stampede, which was responsible for a least 12 was injured. One year later, P.T. Barnum helped to to remove any doubt of the stability of the bridge, when he took the 21 elephants from his world famous circus on a parade across the bridge. Well – at the time, it was quite a cool happening, and the mother of all the viral commercials we see today.
We could tell you a lot more, but lets not steal all the hits from google… Please sit back an enjoy…
