Well – in every big city in the world, you find the typical sightseeing-buses, hop-on/hop-off – and we honestly never know know want to think of them. It just screams tourist in every way. But they are really good for one thing, getting a quick overview over the city that you just have arrived in.
Everytime we land in a new city, we try to take a tour with the buses as the first thing, no matter how touristy it is, and New York was no exception.
We choose the tours offered by Gray Line, where you have several different tour loops, downtown, uptown, Bronx, Brooklyn and night tour. As a novice in NYC, a trip around with a hop on, quickly lets you know where the different parts and districts is located. Empire State, Union Square, Chinatown, Flatiron, Rockefeller Center, The Museum Mile, Apollo Theater, American Museum of Natural History, Central Park , Brooklyn Bridge etc.
Sometimes you can every get lucky and jump on a bus, operated by a guide, who actually tells you a lot of exciting details about the things you see.
So, even for a well-traveled people like ourselves, and even if we find it a bit embarrassing to admit, we actually enjoy on of the biggest tourist-traps in the world. It makes you able to quickly plan what you want to see, and find you way around. Furthermore, you can shoot some cool pictures from the open-air deck.
