We all know the leaning tower in Pisa Italy, but we found another one on our southbound drive from Cancun. About 35 km south of the Hotel Zone, you meet the small cosy sea-port and slow-moving town of Puerto Morelos.
This old fishing village offers some spectacular views over the sea, and on the beach you find a small tower, which isn’t quite as strait as we hope it used to be. As small and sleepy the town seems, actually the marine terminal is equipped to handle containers and is the most important sea port in the state og Quintana Roo. It might just feel sleepy due to the very relaxed mexican lifestyle and tempo. The port also used be the main port to Cozumel, and there used to be and automotive ferry to the small island.
This old fishing village is divided by the main highway. The part towards the sea offers a few hotels, restaurants and tourist shops so it is possible to stay here for a few days. Just hundred meters off shore, you have the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, so snorkeling is an obvious activity while you stay here. They part on the other side of the highway is mainly single level dwellings for the local workers.
More and more tourists have found this village, and in 2010 there was just over 9.000 people living here and the area surrounding are expanding with more and more attractions for tourists. So go and explore this cool and cosy place and soon as you have the chance.
