The Green sea turtle natural habitat Akumal Beach is a heaven for those who love snorkeling. A very peaceful and secluded bay, with clear waters and underground rivers. When you stand on the beach you can see some signs, showing you where the reefs is located in the water, and where you can find the turtles. Be very careful to avoid the red colored reef, the “fire” reef, which can sting and excessive contact can be fatal. Remember that coral dies on humal contact, so avoid any contact. It is illegal to touch wildlife such as sea turtles, so please remember to respect the creatures and don’t bother them in any way. Be aware of the currents, which sometimes can make it harder to swim back to the shore again.
Akumal means “Land of Turtles” in Mayan, and here is the perfect chance to see these great creatures. You can go on a tour with one of the local diveshops, take an unofficial tour with some of the local guides, scouting the beaches for turtle-hungry tourists, or you can just go out on your own as we did.
Once you are done snorkeling, do yourself the favour to relax on the soft sands on the beach and watch the sun set into the ocean with the great touch of colors on the skies, as the scenery chances.
