Just besides the Ground Zero site in NYC, the One World Trade Center is about to be complete. This is the primary building of the new World Trade Center complex in lower manhattan. One WTC is the tallest skyscraper in the western hemisphere with 104 stories, standing on the site of the original 6 World Trade Center. The construction started in late april 2006, under the name “Freedom Tower”. 3 years later, the official name was changed. The Spire was mounted in may 2013, making the building stand 541 meters over ground level. When we visited NYC in december 2013, the finishing work was ongoing and One WTC is supposed to open in the summer 2014.
Almost immediacy after the events on september 11, 2001, that debate started about what would be the new buildings on the site. After a lot of different proposals, the final design for Freedom Tower was ready in the summer for 2005. Actually the symbolic cornerstone was laid already in 2004, but problems in the beginning, about financing, design etc, out the project on pause for a while.
Nowadays the construction is almost complete, and this marvelous glass-building is a great monument, showing the world that the site of 9/11 have risen again. The One World Trade Center is a beautiful monument, a fabolous building and a new peak in the Manhatten Skyline. Next time we are back in NYC we hope to get to the top, to bring you pictures with the views from above. For now, you have to do with these shots from the ground.
