If you have visited Mandarin Oriental, you will know that their pastry chefs knows how to bring you as close to heaven as possible. The selection of cakes and pastry is very impressive, and all made with the deepest respect for the craftsmanship and ingredients. During our stay in Bangkok, we visited to brand new Mandarin Oriental Shop in Gaysorn Plaza, the leading high fashion shopping mall in Bangkok.
Mandarin Oriental has five shoppes within Bangkok, at Siam Paragon, Central Chidlon, The Emporium, Gaysorn and of course the lobby counter in the hotel. De all offer a range of mouth-watering homemade delicacies including breads, pastries, macarons and seasonal favorites including exquisite hampers and moon cakes.
Under the leadership of the Executive Pastru Chef, Claus Olsen, the Mandarin Oriental Shops offers some of the best cakes, and innovative combinations we have ever tasted. E.g. the selection of the new all-time classic, the macarons have 20 different combinations of signature macarons. The shop keeps the 10 most popular macarons each year on the menu, and then innovate 10 new types to see if these get more popular than the former hits. In this way they keep evolving the selection, and find new combinations.
As any total opposite, some of the recipes like croissants and viennoiserie have over 40 years history, and the craftmandship has been handed down through the generations of bakers. They try to preserve the originality of some of their most famous cakes, making sure that the customers always can return to have a experience, like the one they remember.
We had several different tastes at our visit, and besides the macarons, we tried the blueberry cheesecake, the wave and cassis pearls – which all had a very distinctive and rich taste. You can feel the same attention to detail as Mandarins Oriental has as hoteliers – they also have within the pastry-chefs, because it shows that the taste origins from the best ingredients and craftsmanship. The delights are true sensations, and you should do yourself the favor to visit Mandarin Oriental Shop at least one time, during a stay in Bangkok.
Besides the selection of pastry, Mandarin Oriental also offers a wide selection of signature teas from Mariage Frères, which is some of the finest teas you can find. They have even produced a special Oriental Tea, exclusively for the Mandarin Oriental brand, with design which matches the brand perfectly. Furthermore the coffee served, is in a league of it own, as this part of course also has quality in focus.
If you know our blog, you will also know that we definitely enjoys a good piece of pastry, and never turns down the chance to taste some of the best treats that we come across all over the world. So we have tasted many different things, and Mandarin Oriental just never turn down your tastebuds – it is truly amazing what these skilled craftsmen can do in a pastry-kitchen.
