So here are our Top 10 things to do in Maldives
Maldives – the country of with only 4 % of the area over water, and with so many beautiful resorts to visit. You can find one after the other beautiful island where you can spend your holiday. The first time we were in Maldives, we were pretty excited to see what we could do there, isn’t it just a beach and a villa? But we learned that there is so much to do, most of this is, of course, out in the warm waters. This is our Top 10 things to do in Maldives
The house reefs are on most islands better than you can imagine. So remember to bring your snorkeling equipment, and enjoy the fact that you can jump right into the most beautiful scenery directly from your resort. Tons of beautiful fish, reef sharks and another marine life is waiting for you to visit them.
The Marine life in Maldives holds a selection of the big creatures you have to see, and the first of the three most important is the Manta Rays. These gracious rays “fly” through the water and are mostly found at the cleanings stations. Her the Mantas go to let smaller fish clean their skin for parasites. We were so lucky to see 9 Mantas at the same time once – an experience that we will never forget. Don’t be afraid, even though these rays can be huge, but they are very friendly, just keep calm in the waters.
The second creature you should see is the giant Whale Shark. Admitted the first time you jump into the waters together with this big black shadow, you consider if it has read that it is harmless. But this mysterious fish is not harmful at all. They come up to shallow waters from the cold deep, to get warmer over the reefs. Here you can get the chance to swim with the Whale Sharks – at our trip on Maafushivaru; we had the honor to follow a whale shark for almost 90 minutes. Remember your fins, as they are swimming quite fast in the waters.
The third creature you should see is the Sea Turtles. Coming from Europe is was for us quite surprising, but the sea turtles are very common and if you are lucky you can also meet them at your house reef snorkeling at some islands. At Mirihi Island, we had a very memorable afternoon together with a sea turtle having dinner. But you should also go out from the islands to some of the sea mountains where the turtle population often is more concentrated. The turtles are used to people, and you can be lucky to have them swimming very close to you. As with all other marine life, remember not to touch the animals, and let them live their lovely life under water.
#3. Kayaking and non-motorized water sports
Most islands offer different types of water sports. In our opinion, these should always be non-motorized so you can enjoy the sea and nature. Kayaking is an excellent way to see the island from the water side, so we will recommend you to grab a kayak and have a little work out while the colorful fish are swimming below the surface.
#4. Private islands and remote sandbanks
The resorts and islands are quite certain some of the most beautiful place you will ever have seen, but don’t you want to try the ultimate luxury? Having a private island for the evening or night is a dream come true. If you are looking for a special place to “pop the question” or just to enjoy a few hours of complete relaxation, you should consider booking a resort that has a private island. The other choice is to have a picnic to one of the remote sandbanks which “come” out of the sea when the tide is low. Also a fantastic experience, where you will feel one with nature, and have memories you will never forget.
#5. Water Villas
Well, we know that the water villas is the most expensive choice of accommodation in most resorts, but you should try at least once to stay in one of these villas. Just to hear the waves splash against the pillars when you are going to sleep is one of the most therapeutic sounds in the world. And to be able to wake up, have a coffee on the terrace and then go snorkeling in the morning light, brings you to a different state of mind.
No matter if you are very experienced or a new beginner into diving, Maldives is a fantastic place to get your diving license. We took our license at Coco Bodu Hithi were you even have your first dives in the open waters from the beginning. So not only do you learn to dive, but you do also see the underwater marine life from another angle than snorkeling. The quality of the dive centers are very high, and there are many fantastic dive spots in the sea that you can explore.
#7. Spa & Wellness
Maldives is the perfect place to indulge in the best spa treatments you can imagine. Most therapists are from Thailand, Bali, Sri Lanka or Philipines, so these are some of the best hands you can find in Asia. Furthermore is the spa standard one of the best you can find in the world, often with the most stunning views over the sea. And being on a beautiful small island means that you can walk from your villa to the spa in the bathrobe, and feel the sand between your toes. Your mental state will be very relaxed to being with, so we can assure you that the treatment will be even more enjoyed.
You have some of the most beautiful beaches in the world at our feet, so why no just kick back in a hammock with your favorite magazine or a good book? The Maldivian lifestyle is very much “no shoes – no news” and even though we were celebrating New Years together with a lot of other resourceful people, the party was with bare feet in the sands. Some luxury resort has certain dress codes, but most just let you use your common sense. On the luxurious resorts, the sun loungers are places with a lot of space between each other and therefore you can have our privacy here. Another possibility is to hang around in the water villa and just relax in the sun loungers here, in total privacy. Maldives is perfect for unwinding.
#9. Private Dining
The Maldivian resorts, especially the top of the line, have great food with everything you can imagine, but the privacy of sitting on the beach, the jetty or even the landing dock for yourself and enjoy the stunning food. Again the experience of the privacy is the most important part here. Just to sit and hear the waves come ashore makes the dinner twice as good.
#10. Sunset with cocktail or a glass wine
You can find stunning sunsets all over the world, but at Maldives, you most take your time to enjoy it. It can either be from the shore at the resort bar or restaurant or one of the sunset cruises most resorts offers. Typically the trip will include the local dolphins swimming along the boat and playing in the waters, which gives another dimension to the experience. But you don’t need to go out from the shore to seen the sunsets – just sit back and relax in the sand with your loved one and enjoy the colors change in front of you eyes.
We also have a little bonus activity that you should consider – photography – Maldives is one of the most stunning places on earth, and you will be guaranteed end up spending a lot of time capturing your memories. If you are more of an enthusiast into photography, there are some fantastic shots to be taken both over and under the surface, so bring underwater housings, tripod, filters and all the gear you can put into the suitcases – any way you only need a swimsuit and sunscreen besides.
