Review of Loama Resort Maldives at Maamigili, Raa Atoll
Shaped like a teardrop, a piece of Maldivian history comes out of the waters in the Raa Atoll, 50 minutes flight from Male. Loama Resort Maldives is something as rare as a 5-star luxury resort, which holds pride in telling the story about Maldives. In many ways, this island is a bit like a time machine, that with pride shows the culture living in the original heartbeat of the peoples way of life. At Loama Resort Maldives, you find rich culture and heritage told to enlighten the guests on what has been going on on this island for many years. Loama has made their beautiful island into an attraction in it selves, where you can learn about what was going on many years ago on the very same sands at you step on.
From the seaplane, we saw the teardrop in the ocean as we were arriving at Loama, and from above you understand how remote Raa Atoll is. Out here there is not a resort on every second island. When we visited in 2015, only two resorts build out here, and Loama was the newest of them. So very much looking forward to Loama Resort Maldives, our seaplane touched base with the turquoise waters of the lagoon.
When we sat foot on the island, the heritage was apparent right away. The lobby area holds a big collection of ancient artifacts, some of these collected right on the islands; others have been brought to the collection from surrounding Maldivian islands. Besides the collection, the island also has two old wells and an art exhibition.
Turning our eye to the villas, Loama has a classic jetty with water villas heading towards either sunset or sunrise, 2 Ocean Pool Suites and 1 Royal Ocean Pool Suite, and a broad selection of 45 villas on the beaches. Beach Villas, Family Villas and Beach Pool Villas.
We stayed in a water villa, facing the sunset. The villa layout was with a bathroom, divided into two sections with the vanity inside together with the closets. Outside the bathroom, there is the toilet, shower, and bathtub. In front of the spacious bedroom, the sun-drenched patio with the steps going directly into the warm Indian Ocean.
The decor was bright, new and very well kept. Colors are white, sand and blue, which maintains an excellent interaction with the skies, sand and water.
Loama offers different dining options with a great breakfast buffet where you start the day with sand between our toes.
A diving center, fitness center, complimentary yoga lessons, and fantastic spa with overwater treatment rooms, all of which is centered in the middle of the island and a selection of excursions, both in nature and to local islands, to learn more about the history. Along the main pool, you can hang out all day if you do not prefer to dip in the Indian Ocean. At the diving center the lagoon is perfect for stand up paddling, as it is very sandy, without any cores, and quite calm. Some of the above are subjects we soon will return to.
But how did TravellersPlanet like Loama Resort Maldives? The fact that this resort focuses on the Maldivian history is unique, and for us, it was very helpful to learn more about what had happened on the islands during the last many years. The islands location and the quietness of the Raa Atoll makes the island feel very pristine. Hanging out at the sand bank at the end of the island when the night comes, was just stunning. During the full moon, the light was so powerful, that the island felt like it was bathed in sunlight.
