Our time in Bali took us to the next stop – Sanur, where we were staying at the new Maya property. This beautiful resort is a quite different from the worn out Sanur.
Driving along the main road through the small city, we will guarantee that Maya Sanur will catch your eye. Like a spaceship parked in the middle of Central Park in the MiB movies, this property stands out from its surroundings. Our driver from Ubud didn’t exactly know which hotel was Maya, but when he stopped to ask the local drivers for direction as we came to Sanur, his response said it all: “Oh – is THAT hotel Maya Sanur – I certainly know where that is”. Maya might be the first mover for a refurbishment of Sanur, which could be much needed to get back more tourists to the area.
In the front towards the street, there are 2 restaurants and as you enter the lobby from the sloped walkway, the views of the main pool give you the impression of the idea behind this resort. The main infinity pool makes the center and vast solid buildings in a modern look and style embrace the pool.
Stretching from the lobby to the beach is the main building, 4 floors with rooms, where the ground floor has direct access to the infinity pool.
The balconies are constructed like a birds nest in steel, from where you can hang out and enjoy the views over the sea. In the front of the buildings, Tree Bar, and the main restaurant is located just in front of the beach, along with the separate building for the suites. The resort is very well located right on the beachfront of Sanur, perfect for an early morning walk to see the sunrise in the Balinese sea.
In the center of the resort, the fitness center, and spa is located. We tried the signature treatment – Soothing Maya Massage – 75 minutes Balinese treatment where long strokes are the main action. As any good massage is supposed to, it left us very relaxed and invigorated. The Spa is located in the center of the resort and is very clean and nice.
The reef is the main restaurant, where we dined for each breakfast. The food was good quality, and the service attentive. Foodies will not be in for any big surprises, but the breakfast is a good traditional intercontinental selection as you know them. There are some small platforms with tables, out in the water, where you can enjoy the wind from the sea as you wake up to spend another day in Bali. What is not to like?
In front of the property there are 2 choices of restaurants, Graze which offers cosmopolitan fare and selections of bread and dishes.
Kuu on the opposite site was our choice for dinner, as the Japanese menu was just we wanted that evening.
Our choice was some sashimi and sushi, along with a set of desserts. A dinner is not a proper dinner without desserts, which is Ekaterina’s saying at almost every dinner. For an in-house dinner – Kuu is the place you should go.
Maya Sanur is a brand new luxury resort, in the worn down surroundings of the beach town Sanur. The location is perfect right on the beachside and you have several possibilities to enjoy the sea while dining or relaxing at the main pool. The rooms are well equipped, clean and in perfect condition. So there is not a finger to be put on this resort. The staff was very welcoming and positive in any way, and in our opinion, Maya is the obvious choice if you would like to stay in Sanur. And remember to grab some sashimi at Kuu, when the hunger sets in.
